It warms our hearts that so many people are happy with our programs. We are humbled by the opportunity we have in working with children from our local communities. Check out what some parents have written about their experience with Hot Ground Gym®.

Our Clients - Success stories

Hot Ground Gym is an amazing program that offers tons of fun for the kids while instilling important life skills. The Hot Ground team builds confidence and helps establish discipline in a patient and respectful way. My son looks forward to going every week. I've seen him do things he was once very scared to do because he's believing in himself more and gets lots of encouragement from the team! I cannot say enough good things about Hot Ground!

My boys (ages 11 and 7) go to HGG every week and they LOVE the missions Sam and James develop. I've seen an increase in their physical and mental strength over the time we've been going and the boys have made new friends as well. We also did a Good Friday Camp recently and appreciated the fact that 8-hour or 4-hour camps are available on days the kids have off school to accommodate working parents (and overstretched Easter brunch hosts too!)

I was looking for an alternative to martial arts for my son, and learned about Hot Ground. I'm extremely impressed by what they do. In addition to challenging parkour, which he loves, they teach practical life skills that go beyond anything I've seen elsewhere (except possibly the Boy Scouts). My son has been learning first aid and other life-saving skills, survival techniques, and more -- and I'm seeing a big improvement in both his physical confidence and emotional maturity. The coaches are great with kids, striking a nice balance between good-humored and no-nonsense, which the kids definitely respond to! The facilities are very well-maintained, and I like the fact that they take the kids outside when the weather's good. I've decided to try a week of the summer camp this year as well, and we'll see how that goes. Hot Ground isn't inexpensive, but the price (especially for the camp) is in keeping with most other after-school activities.

Hot Ground is an amazing program for kids of all ages. Sam is excellent with constant new challenges. The kids are exhausted after each class and always want more. We started out with just one visit a week and after the first week, switched to 2. My son is definitely more focused and disciplined after only a month. We use the classes as incentives for him to achieve better days in school. He loved the day off camp his only wish was that he did the full day vs half.

Sam is the reason why my daughter LOVES Hot Ground Gym so much so we moved to this location with him. I am floored that there is a bad review of this place. Hot Ground Gym has been a godsend for my daughter. It has helped her to be healthier, it has increased her self-esteem, it has done amazing things for her spirit and SHE LOVES GOING! The staff have all been nothing but fantastic in every way! Thank you Sam and team and keep up the amazing job you are doing. You are making a HUGE difference in these kid's lives! Thank you!

Hot Ground Gym has been such a great experience for my son. We have seen tremendous difference in his confidence inside and outside of the gym. He loves going each week and the staff is truly dedicated to all of their students (and the parents!). We are SO glad they’re in the area and look forward to seeing even more growth in our son’s development. If you haven’t been, go check them out!! It’s worth it!

Hello everyone! My 8.5 year old daughter has been attending the Arlington Heights location for about a year now. She absolutely loves it! I stay and watch every class, and I couldn't be more proud of the skills she is learning. She is pretty athletic, but shy and quiet at the same time. Since she has been enrolled, I've really seen her confidence level change for the better! Being in the safe environment and learning skills out everyday lifestyle, has helped complete the human she is today. We also love the teachable moments of respect, teamwork, and discipline. Marty has been the operations manager since we started and is absolutely fabulous. I can't say enough wonderful things about hot ground gym. Have your child try it, and I'm sure you won't leave disappointed.

We have been bringing our seven-year-old son to Hot Ground Gym for several months now, and we couldn’t be happier. First of all, he loves it. We sought out HGG mainly for child development reasons, but that doesn’t change the joy it brings us to see our son so happy there. Even after a long day of school and other demands on his time, he always wants to go. Most importantly, though, we’ve seen a lot of development in a relatively short time. His confidence has grown, and he’s shown development in his listening skills and ability to work in teams. His leadership skills are still a work in progress, but he did recently advance to a higher “rank,” and it’s easy to see a path forward where he would fully embrace leadership responsibility. My wife and I have also noticed that, with the instructors being military vets and first responders (and, regardless of that, just really stand-up guys), it is nice for our son to have such positive male role models in his life. Veterans Day was a little more meaningful this year for our son since he now considers a former Marine amongst his friends (one of the instructors who has made a particularly strong impression on him). HGG is so much more than just a fun obstacle course. The instructors clearly put the children's development above all else. They’ve created a culture that is incredibly positive while at the same time demanding; they won’t let your child get away with anything less than his or her best effort, but they will also make sure your child leaves feeling loved and respected. I only wish we had found HGG sooner.

My son struggles with ADHD, anxiety, and sensory sensitivities so I was nervous about enrolling him in Hot Ground Gym. It turns out that my concerns were completely unnecessary! Sam Simpson, the General Manager and Junior Boots Instructor, is amazing. Each week, Sam works with my son and the other members of Alpha Company to develop confidence, courage, discipline, and leadership. Sam offers endless patience and gentle motivation, even when my son is feeling especially nervous or overwhelmed. I cannot say enough positive things about Sam and Hot Ground Gym!

We moved here nearly a year ago, and started our son shortly after the move. Since then, he has grown in confidence, independence, compassion, trust, and respect. He has the diagnoses of ADHD, oppositional defiance disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, and anxiety. He hasn’t had a single tantrum since his third week with Sam at Hot Ground. He is kinder, more respectful, and genuinely wants to have better and more meaningful relationships with peers. The teamwork and relationship model offered here is unique in that the kids depend on any random group as the class days vary. The outward focus seems to be physical development, but the true focus is mental, social-emotional, and community growth. Sam absolutely loves the kids as they are, wherever they are, and is building up each person as that individual needs to be built up. He is a true gem, and my son looks forward to each class, excited about each one.

We were very excited that Hot Ground Gym offered a camp session for Good Friday. It gave our son the opportunity to spend the day learning new skills and being active. We love Hot Ground Gym! We have seen a big change in our son over the course of the last couple of months. All of the instructors are great with him and have taught him so much! He is learning to work with other kids as part of a team, to be a good listener and be respectful.

My daughter went to the Arlington Heights HGG school closed day on 9/30/19. This was her 2nd time there. The 1st time was for a birthday party. She LOVED the day!!! She says the Zombie game was her favorite. She was a little nervous when she got there. Sam was so welcoming and sweet to her. She warmed up and absolutely loved her day. We can't wait to sign up as a member.

I was so excited, when I got an email, about registering Ian for Hot Ground Presidents Day camp. Days off of school, usually mean a full day of TV watching, and junk food at Grandmas, so the option of having him, hang with friends, participate is lots of action packed fun, was an awesome alternative. He LOVED it! He was so excited to tell me all about the knife throwing, and Archery, and the fun team works activities that he did. He was active and busy all day, by the time I picked him up, he was spent! We love Hot Ground, and look forward to enrolling Ian any camps they have in the future!!!

We have really loved the experiences at HGG. My son attended the summer camp and faced different, exciting adventures each day. He had the opportunity to be both a leader and follower, working as a team to meet challenges, learning about a variety of things from grappling to knife throwing, rope climbing to archery and so much more. He has done other physically challenging programs but enjoys HGG most because while it is physical work he learns new skills and has different experiences each time. In the weekly program, he has similar adventures, focused on both team building and individual growth. My son speaks highly of his experiences with the staff and he feels well supported by all of them. Highly recommend this program!

Hot Ground Gym is a wonderful place for children not just physically, but mentally as well. We have two boys who love it. The classes are led by fantastic instructors, especially Sam at our Arlington Heights location, that really care about the kids. Each week is different and my boys look forward to what challenges they will face. Reently, we also had a birthday party which was fantastic as well. We provided the food and Hot Ground took care of everything else from beginning to end in terms of setting up, cleaning up, and of course keeping the kids entertained with their obstacle course and team building events. The highlight was my son, the birthday boy, riding in a kayak held up by all of his friends. I highly recommend Hot Ground Gym to anyone looking for a a place to help strengethen their childs body and mind

Wow. What an awesome birthday party Sam and his helper Evan led for my 7 year old daughter and 17 of her friends! I can't rave enough about how great everything was; and the best part was that I didn't have to do a thing except show up. The girls had so much fun doing obstacles involving climbing, crawling, flipping, and more...all the while building trust and confidence in each other and themselves. My daughter's favorite part was when she was lifted and carried in a canoe by her friends. She also loved the obstacle that began with flipping over a hanging bar (which she was afraid of at first, but Sam helped her overcome that fear within seconds). We will definitely be back! My son can't wait for his birthday now, too! HIGHLY recommend this place!

I cant say enough great things about this place! What a great concept. My son was invited to a friends birthday party here and it was a blast. I saw a couple parents (including myself) that wanted to jump in the party with the kids, because it looked so much fun. The place is super clean and well maintained. In the beginning I didn't know if my son will be able to do some of the obstacles, he is not the most athletic kid in the class and that was my concern. However, the instructors encouraged and motivated every single child at the party and no one left behind. In the beginning of the party when they were explaining the rules one of the instructors said "Don't be afraid of anything. We ask you to do it because we are here for you and we will overcome any challenge together." The obstacle courses were a blast, but the coolest thing was their team building activities. The kids had carried the birthday boy in a kayak above their heads. They also go some parents involved in the kayak team building activity. This is an awesome place for kids!!!

This place is the absolute best! The coaches are amazing. My son had his 8th birthday party here and now he's almost 9. The development we have seen is really incredible, and my son isn't even consistent about going weekly which we are trying to do. My son did some summer camp and will be doing winter camp as well. It's challenging, fun, and they learn so much about being a better and stronger person. It's so wonderful for kids to have such amazing role models and teachers in the staff. Many thanks to everyone at Hot Ground Gym!!

This is a great place for kids to use up some energy in a great way, to conquer some of their fear and learn new things and skills (like archery, teamwork, leadership, rope climbing). The classes are a very nice mixture of physical activity and skill learning and the kids love it. The teams running the gym also seem to genuinely love interacting with the kids and teaching them. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great activity for kids.

Hot Ground Gym is a fantastic place for children to grow both physically and mentally. My daughters have started taking classes here and the weekly curriculum is outstanding for strength, confidence and team building. We recently hosted a birthday party here for my 8 year old and it was phenomenal. Well organized from start to finish. Sam and Evan did an incredible job directing and encouraging 18 girls through several obstacles and team building exercises. All of the kids had an excellent time. I would highly recommend this place. You can’t go wrong.

I just left Hot Ground Gym after an awesome team building event that I scheduled for my daughters’ Indian Princess program. Sam was amazing. He connected with the girls and got them moving, thinking, problem solving and working together. He kept them engaged and smiling which is not always easy for girls ages 5-12. Well done Sam and well done Hot Ground Gym. I would definitely recommend Sam and the gym if you are looking for a great event for groups sized 10-30. I know they do birthday parties there as well which I am sure would be great!

"I LOVE THIS PLACE!" These are the first words quoted words by my two sons who spent a day actively running, climbing, going through obstacle courses, and working as a team with a whole group of kids they have never met before. It can be challenging to find activities that are safe, engaging, and age appropriate for two very active boys during no school days and it's too cold outside to enjoy nature. Hot Ground Gym in Arlington Heights was recommended to us by a friend and her son. After one full day of high energy fun, my sons (ages 10 and 8) are already planning ahead for their next days off of school and asking to be signed up at HGG. They raved about Sam, the manager, and how he's knowledgeable sharing safety lessons and tips to the kids. Knowing Sam has a background in being a first responder and an Army Veteran, I feel very secure dropping off my sons knowing that activities are planned with safety in mind. From a parent stand point, this is the highest compliment to HGG! They are choosing to climb, run, lift, partner up with kids they don't know, and accept challenges to physical activities instead of begging to play video games, go to the movies, or watch tv! They will be repeat attendees for sure and I know I won't hear any, "I don't want to go... " whining from them!

This place is truly awesome! Great for children to interact with one another, to learn to work together to complete tasks. My son is a huge fan, We did the summer camp this year and it was filled with so many activities, he came home tired and with fun stories! (Nerf gun Battles/Water Parks/ Apparently my son prefers Sams grilling skills than mine/the Beach / Obstacle courses). The instructors are amazing with the kids, they motivate each child to achieve their best, if they see a child struggle or afraid of doing an activity, they provide one on one and walk them through it, this empowers the child and enables the child to realize that even through things might be scary, they are achievable and you can see on that kids face after they faced that fear and receive that support from teammates. It's nice to have a place where the kids are encouraged to be themselves and support one another. Thank you guys for providing a great Summer experience for Zak!!!

Literally love this place and all that they stand for. This is a facility ran by people who care about setting our kids up for success with a side of tough skin. It's a bit far for us but my sis in law and I make it happen by alternating car pool just so we can get the kids into atleast one week of their camp sessions. As a mom of three boys we have been in countless paid programs over the past few years. Things I appreciate HGG provide that are unique in children's programs from my experience: (1) Automated text message reminders of classes (2) The ability for blocking out classes a month at a time (3) No commitment of day of the week. Ie: One week want to go Tuesday and next week Wednesday, done. No special permission needed. We tend to go on the same day of the week, but the flexibility without the extra phone call is phenomenal. (4) There is a one time sign up fee and then a monthly automated payment. I appreciate this being done automatically and not having to pay per class. (5) Last but not least my kids really really like it. Every week the set up is completely different which helps negate boredom. I also like that it's run like a tabata class with different stations and then one "special" activity each week (like indoor zip-lining etc.) In summary, we love this place for our family. It's providing our boys with skills that will certainly help them in many aspects of physical activity in which I feel our society is lacking. If we could make it twice a week we would (and may try to do so in the summer).

We found Hot Ground Gym (HGG) by accident because of my daughter’s interest in Parkour or Ninja-type obstacle course activities, kind of like the American Ninja Warrior tv show. There are two aspects to HGG’s approach that made this place a great choice for our child’s after-school activities: 1) classes offer far more than a fun, physical after-school activity where the kids get to burn energy by climbing, jumping, swinging on ropes, etc; and 2) while the kids are “playing” they’re also learning about teamwork, confidence, cooperation, responsibility, leadership and problem-solving skills. That is the backbone of this whole company which is run by veterans—teaching kids very important life skills during the classes through the different activities. Other important details which factored into our decision choosing HHG included: 1) small class size; 2) individualized attention; 3) beautiful new facility that is very clean; and 4) very reasonable rates for classes. We started our child at 1 time per week but are moving up to 2 times per week since she loves it so much.

We have two daughters, ages five and seven. At Hot Ground Gym they get a good work out but don’t even realize they are exercising because they are focused on the obstacle course tasks. These classes safely challenge the kids to try things they normally wouldn’t get to try: climbing over walls, running up ramps, climbing ropes, etc. Sam does an amazing job breaking down the ever-rotating obstacles into separate skills and then training those skills and muscle groups. My daughters are growing in confidence and resilience. We are so glad to have found HGG!

HGG helping children to overcome thier difficulties

Below are examples of how our programs have helped families since our beginning in 2014.
HGG helping children to overcome thier difficultiessmear
The most often experienced example of how our program has benefited children revolves around a child being able to excel in sports after working with us. Often, the younger children that come to us lack the confidence, coordination and conditioning to do well in “traditional team sports”. So after several months or years of participation in our classes and camps, they transition out to team sports, and excel. We get emails, phone calls and letters all the time about how little “Timmy” is doing great now in elementary school, junior-high school, high school and even college sports thanks to HGG.
The fitness training, teamwork challenges, and character developing experience provided to them while with HGG set them up for success in a more competitive and traditional environment (team sports).

The next example is kinda similar to the previous, but starts to show our age. We have several previous students of HGG now serving in the military. To date, there are 4 soldiers, 1 sailor, and even 1 Marine Corps Officer that all swear it was the time that they spent with us that prepared them for their service….. This really makes us extra proud.
HGG helping children
Our part-time employees. Currently, all part-time employees (Part-time Instructors) are former students of HGG. Once a student ages out of training, but still would like to be a part of HGG, we will allow that young adult to apply for a job with us. This has been a great way for kids and their families to be a part of HGG for many years. Good for them because they get to earn money, great for us to hire an employee that has already been decently trained ;)

Overcoming behavioral barriers. We have seen time and again that some children come to us from an occupational therapist, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other therapeutic program facilitators (often recommended to us by the therapist) to see if our approach will assist the child in overcoming certain behaviors/conditions. Such conditions as: ADD/ADHD, Anxiety, childhood depression, OCD, various anger or rage conditions, and numerous others. Where the “barrier” comes into play is that students with some of these conditions/behaviors may not be able to appropriately participate in other traditional camps and/or extra-curricular activities.
This is due to their inability to “behave themselves” while in attendance, and are removed from a program due to “bad behavior”. How we combat a lot of these types of behaviors is simple in its roots, we keep the kids engaged. We RARELY EVER allow any “downtime” in our programs. Basically the kids are too busy and engaged to “mess around”. This fact coupled with the interesting and “rough” environment that the child is in, by whom the child is being “taught” by (us), and the types of activities engaged in allows most children that have experienced behavior barriers to thrive with us.
Thus overcoming behavioral barriers that the family and child may have experienced previously with other programs….. Not all, most. We definitely have had to kick a few kids out over the years, but as a general rule, we often assimilate these types of students into our programs with relative ease. We often don’t even realize that this is the case until a parent of one such child tells us that they are so happy their child is doing great with us, and that they usually don’t always do “great” in other programs. We are proud to be of service in this regard.
